ALOE VERA - so many uses, here's a little about it and some tips and tricks on working with this plant medicine.
Aloe vera is a wondrous plant, with so many uses, most commonly to treat ailments of the digestive system such as constipation, gas, peptic ulcers and IBS.
Is also used to treat asthma, apparently a good thing to do is keep the Aloe leaf in a cool, dark room for a week before treatment for asthma as the main healing agent is the Polysaccharides and they 10x if you treat the leaf like this prior to treatment.
It is used externally to treat minor burns, bruises, sunburn and insect bites. I also treated Psoriasis successfully with a home-made Aloe Vera Skulp wash (Just plain blended inner leaf gel with a bit of almond oil, also works well with liquorice root and apparently will help with eczema too)
Also for those that want to stop nail-biting, the bitter latex may be applied to nails as a repellent, just be sure not to do the cooking, I made that mistake once!
It is also said to be good for auto-immune illnesses (whole leaf extract, or just gel taken internally)
Overall I would recommend taking Aloe as a supplement, not continuously but every now and then, such a healing plant. Just do be cautious to wash the inside thoroughly before use, to make sure there is not latex on it, unless you want full extract, the latex is a laxative and a powerful one at that! Also avoid during breast feeding, pregnant, or if you are trying to conceive. Can also cause potassium deficiency and interfere with other medications, so do them separately! Do not use as a laxative for more than 10 days at a time.
Recommended dosage is 50-100ml whole leaf extract daily or 0.5-1 liter of the gel daily, do not use more than 10 days consecutively!
When growing this beauty keep in a bright sunny spot, no less than 23degrees and half sand, half peat make the perfect mix to start, they are hardy once big, use seeds within one year of harvest (might take 4 years or longer to seed). Sprouts should appear after 2-4 weeks!
